A Bendigo Celebrant Explains

One of the questions I get asked most by couples planning weddings in Bendigo and Central Victoria is:

“Can my best friend marry us?”

The short answer is yes… and no.

The legal answer

In Australia, your marriage can only be legally solemnised by an authorised marriage celebrant, a minister of religion, or a state-authorised official.

So, unless your friend is a registered celebrant, they can’t legally marry you.

But here’s the good news!

There are a couple of ways to make your ceremony feel much more personal.

Option 1: Your friend conducts the ceremony

Many couples across Bendigo and Central Victoria choose to have a close friend or family member tell their story, introduce the ceremony, and guide everyone through the celebration.

Then, I step in to complete the legal wording, witness the vows, sign the paperwork and officially marry you.

It’s the best of both worlds as you get the personal touch from someone who knows you well, while everything is completed legally.

Option 2: Legals only first

Some couples prefer to complete a simple legal ceremony beforehand. Then, on their wedding day, their friend leads a completely personalised ceremony without any legal requirements.

Having a friend conduct your ceremony can make your wedding feel incredibly personal, but it’s worth remembering that public speaking, managing nerves, and keeping a ceremony flowing isn’t as easy as it looks.
